Personally I would not say anyone is mad if I find that he or she loves watching cartoons. This stems from the idea that people are different and their preferences vary from one person to another. I may be an addict of watching movies, another a fan of football but another person’s interest may be spending a whole afternoon infront of his or her computer screen watching cartoons. Others love them to the point of making sure they buy a copy of their favorite cartoon at the movie store twice a week. Some even have an entire library or collection of them in their houses. You may think you are the only one who loves them and can express that easily in public only that you have not met other lovers of the same. You need to express what you love without fear of being intimidated by anyone because that is what you love.

We end up with mental illness, cancer, depression, unhappiness, marriage break ups, broken hearts, family feuds, debilitating neurosis, psychotic sister in laws, not to mention our own inner demons that come to haunt us privately. Sure there is the other side to human life that somehow makes it all bearable, the happiness and laughter. But to think about this dark side of life – the unhappiness and suffering we know exists around us and within us, well that it is a real problem we are living with as humans. The human condition is a force to be reckoned with – I don’t know who can reckon with it but humanity is in desperate need for it to be solved.

I listen to music all the time – and while I’m not generally the biggest fan of indie bands, when I first heard the band Noah And The Whale recently, I fell absolutely in love with their sound. To me, their sound is reminiscent of British pop music, which is one of my favorite genres, even though they consider themselves to be an indie folk band. My favorite song so far is Noah And The Whale – Give It All Back. The song feels truly uplifting, which is a quality I look for in the music I listen to. And the lyrics are all about performing, which is a subject dear to my heart, because once upon a time I fronted a local band here in my hometown, and I know what it feels like to have that kind of passion for performing. I’ll definitely be purchasing one of Noah and the Whale’s albums soon.

Sailing boats can not only be a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work. There are a number of reasons for this. For a man sail boats can be an expression of his ego and his need to prove himself as a good sailor, just like a businessman wants to prove himself as a good businessman or a footballer as the best. It’s all good reinforcement for a man’s ego.

Sailing boats can also be fun, it can promote teamwork among the sailors when they are tacking, or putting up the spinnaker, it can bring people together from different walk of life that by virtue of their different upbringings and jobs may never have crossed paths.

Recently the Sydney to Hobart yacht race was on between the cities of Sydney and Hobart. For the men you could see the relief in just making it to the finish line and the satisfaction derived for their ego, but also you could see it was hard work, just actually surviving the race between vomiting overboard and trying to keep the boat ploughing on. But such is our human nature, most of these men will be back to do it all again and prove that they can hack it. Not that I’m criticizing that, it’s just what happens, and something we can all relate to, the need to prove ourselves, prove we can do something, prove we are good, satisfy the ego.

I imagine sailing originated as a means for hunting for food, transport between islands and for exploration and discovery of the world. It would then have evolved into a means for countries to trade goods in these new lands. Sailing boats have also been used in in wars and battles. Sailing boats then became recreational, and now as with most things sailing has become cutthroat in its competitiveness, with trophies around the world fiercely fought over all year round.

So what is it about our human condition that turns everything from something developed out of necessity to something that becomes highly competitive and cut throat, whether in business, sport or just life in general? The insatiable need to satisfy the ego and the constant need to prove ones worth and prove one can achieve something or do something,. The highest mountain in the world is there in all its beauty and to discover and explore by climbers, but now it is like a freeway as people compete with each other to get to the top.

So yeah sailing can be fun and has evolved over the years from being a practical transportation and exploration vessel into something that is now much more than even just fun and recreation, it is like everything has become a highly competitive sport, all in the name of satisfying man’s insatiable ego.

I have never allowed my son to go to any concerts and I wanted to make his seventeenth birthday really great and include his first concert.
