I was the challenge of learning a new language for the first time in school. As our education system requires each student must learn two foreign languages. Depending on the school, students are learning English and French (like mine), some English and German, and some of them English and Italian. I loved English (can not be said of France)! I tried to learn. Believe me, this was a challenge in a class with 30 students and only a teacher! I learned mostly from books, reading and writing … and surprise, when it came time to talk in English, I could not find my words! Has had the same problem? I know many friends who had the same experience. Some of them learned English with a dictionary and phrase book, and some of them joined the English classes. Few of them speak the new language quickly, but most of us … we were trying and trying very hard.
After many years, moving to India, I had to learn Hindi. A difficult language! Different sounds, different scripts, and once again the learning books did not work. I tried for some time, and reached a beginner level. I was able to survive, but he was not pleased by the inability to share feelings deep and my experience with my Indian friends. The lack of communication due to lack of knowledge of the language made life very difficult sometimes. At that time I learned OnSite Language Services, a language immersion program for learning that helps English / Spanish to meet people speaking Hindi / Urdu and other Indian languages. Their motto is "Immerse to talk" because they believe that immersion is the best way to learn a new language.
OSLS principles are natural, yet have not thought of them! We will learn as children! What does it mean? Children learn through experience everyday, not through lessons, but they acquire the language they need for their use; that talk before writing and reading. Through OSLS you become a child again, to learn to hear the new language and speaking before reading or writing. This does not mean that writing or reading is neglected, but the program focuses on speaking. Being a community learning-based program, students learn the new language mostly in the native community or in private sessions with a language assistant. This makes the easy to build relationships and learning the culture of a natural process. Of course, learning requires sweat, frustration and … the humility to recognize that not know everything, to accept that people will laugh at you and persist in maintaining contact shameful language.
So what can I learn from my language learning experience? I learned … to learn! I learned that the immersion language learning is the method more efficient to learn a new language … as long as you work hard!
