Defenses against nuclear weapons during the Cold War?

I've been doing some research in the Cold War long ago (I just find it interesting) learning a lot of things, etc. but recently I came across something that puzzled me kind of .. I'm in the middle of the book "The Cold War: A New History" by John Lewis Gaddis, and found the following passage: "… The discussions of strategic arms limitation … in 1972 there had been a Soviet-American agreement limiting the number of intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missiles on each side at his disposal, and a treaty banning more than symbolic defenses against such missiles … "(Note that I left some of the superfluous information) moving from my question: What was the argument against the defenses against those missiles? The limitation of defenses does not seem to make sense. Thank you!

Nuclear threat was what kept the two superpowers to start a war. They knew they had enough weapons pointed the way to reduce it to fifty times more nuclear wasteland. If you have built defenses enough to reduce the threat to the insignificant, then the danger of nuclear war, suddenly grew exponentially as one of them thought they could get away to bomb the other. By reducing their defenses were in fact trying to ensure that there would be a nuclear war. Moreover, both parties knew that he could not stop a barrage of nuclear missiles, but were not sure that the other does not. So they both tried to reduce the other's ability to defend himself to keep the real nuclear threat.
