talking stop watch

Every month or so I read about the planned demise of new media of some kind, because our children have short attention spans and only communicate by text messages. The theory is that when our children grow, the media will be the main form of communication so you must prepare now.

This is a false assumption.

My son is a sophomore at a local university. My son recently grew a beard that looks a lot like Wolverine in X-Men. Rarely used email and joins Facebook. It only takes a style of jeans and loves T-shirts with sarcastic comments or math humor:
There are only 2 types of people in the world, those who love binary and those who do not.

My daughter is constantly text messages on your phone cell but rarely talks about it. It takes some Hollister with raised letters. Katie is too young for the Internet and I've closed two of their MySpace accounts (with the records I grabbed my router) and has a blog. It's a dangerous world. She checks her email every two weeks or less.

Children do not blog. Children do not email. Children do not talk on the phone. Not required. They have no work and remain focused in school, relationships and self-discovery. Someday soon going to grow.

When my kids hit the job market, your environment will change and so will behavior. That will move away from friends and in the workplace. They will move away from self-discovery and have to move in a world of self-promotion, construction of authority and leadership. A race will bring a desktop and a laptop computer and put the cell phone on vibrate. My son will have to miss the funky beard and buy some khaki and collared shirts.

Children do not blog today because they have to. Do not use email because not have to. Text messages, because there are unlimited text messages, unlimited minutes are not. They do not need LinkedIn or Plaxo – no need to create professional network or your resume. It is no surprise to me that my children do not read blog feeds – That they have writing assignments in school all week and they are busy reading and researching every night.

If you are looking to predict the future their children, you also pay attention to the factors that contribute to their behavior. Our children are doing what is natural and effective for your environment. Facebook, MySpace, text messaging games and video that sense today. They not tomorrow.
